Homes That Are Popular For Retirement Age

Types Of Retirement Homes

There are many different types of homes that are popular for retirement age individuals.  These retirement communities can be specifically for active adults, assisted living facilities, independent living communities, continuing care retirement communities, Alzheimer’s care facilities, and nursing care homes.  It is possible to find retirement new homes in any state, but you should make sure the type of care is adequate for your needs.  Additionally, many gated retirement communities have their own country clubs and golf courses for residents.  It all depends on your budget and lifestyle wishes.

What To Look For In A Retirement Community

The first issue to think about when looking for a retirement new home in a community is the location.  There are retirement communities in cities and small towns.  Do you want to stay in the same area or go further away?  What kind of weather do you prefer, as many retirees like to go to warmer areas such as Florida or Arizona.  The most Important thing is deciding where you want to live.

Of the many types of retirement communities listed above, you will need to determine the type that is best for your needs.  You should gather information on the cost of the retirement community and make sure the facilities are properly licensed, and accredited with credentials for all parts of the community.  The extra research will pay off in the long run.  You should also check out what is available locally, as having shops and attractions close by can be a must for many individuals.

Take into account the amenities at each community.  Do you dislike walking up stairs?  Then search for a community that has an elevator.  Other popular amenities include shower chairs, good lighting, wide hallways, meal plans, and wheelchair accessibility.  They may have golf courses, swimming pools, and other health and fitness equipment available for your use.  You should make a list of the amenities you want and keep them in mind when searching for a retirement new home.

As with any community, you want it to be safe and feel secure.  You need to check out the community’s security, is it gated, are there security personnel working at night, and how do the doors lock.  You can usually determine how safe an area is just by paying attention when you visit, but you should also ask questions of the staff, residents, and local police to gain more knowledge on the safety of the community.

Finally, you need to see if the staff are your kind of people.  Friendly staff are very important to retirement communities, and the staff can be the sticking point for your choice.  You should visit the retirement communities of interest and speak to different staff members.  Observe how the other residents interact with the staff and other residents.  This can be a sure sign of a well-run community and a great place to live.

Popular Retirement Communities In Florida

Walden Woods is one of the best active adult communities.  It is found just outside of Tampa and has some beautiful surrounding landscape and scenery.  You can really experience nature here and catch a glimpse of dolphins and manatees in the nearby waterways.  The facility has racquetball courts, a heated pool, whirlpool spa, and many other active and sports related facilities.

Lake Ashton is particularly great for golfers and a great example of luxurious retirement.  Besides the fantastic golfing available, there is a dock, movie theater, bowling room, billiards center, heated pool, lighted tennis courts, and more.  The entire community takes up about 700 acres that border Lake Ashton.  There is plenty to keep you busy at all times.

Mt Olive Shores North was designed for those that want a home, but also enjoy recreational vehicle lifestyle.  The homes come in an array of sizes, suits, colors, and styles and are equipped with RV ports for your RV.  They have facilities that cover a range of budgets, and if you like RV’s, then this is the place for you.

Other Retirement Communities

Arizona is home to many retirement communities.  This state is actually home to the first retirement community, Del Webb (also called Pulte Homes).  They first opened their doors in 1960 in Sun City, Arizona.  Retirement communities in Arizona are perfect for those snow birds, or retirees that flee the winter.  Other retirees also make Arizona their home all year round.  The Sonoran desert is the site of spectacular scenery and receives over 300 days of sunshine a year.  Golf is also a popular sport in Arizona and a draw for those golf enthusiasts.

Quite a large portion of the valley of the sun (areas around Phoenix) is home to retirement communities.  Though Phoenix is popular, there are retirement communities found throughout the state.  Many of the retirement communities are designed for active adults and have golf facilities, tennis courts, fitness centers, and organized activities.

Popular Retirement Home Cities

Besides the areas mentioned above, the following spots are also popular retirement destinations:  Loveland and Fort Collins, Colorado; Bellingham, Washington; Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Sarasota, Florida; Fayetteville, Arkansas; Charleston, South Carolina; Asheville, North Carolina; San Diego, California; San Antonio, Texas; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Gainesville, Florida; Iowa City, Iowa; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Spokane, Washington, and Ashland, Oregon.

Retiring Abroad

Many individuals also enjoy retiring to foreign countries.  This is because of the affordable cost of living, the fact that you can get ocean view and other fantastic property for less, and there are modern amenities available.  Sometimes, they can receive even better health care then previously receiving; you may receive a tax advantage, and you can find retirement homes in cities or rural areas that will suite your every whim and desire.  Costa Rica is a popular retirement spot as it has spectacular scenery, tax incentives, is inexpensive, and relatively close to the United States.  You should definitely think about retiring abroad; even if you are not sure; do some research before crossing it off your list.
